The beach in Puerto López |
Puerto López is a small town with 16,000 inhabitants on the Pacific coast of Ecuador . The city's two main industries are fishing and tourism. Whale watching tours are offered from mid-June to October. At this time of year, humpback whales migrate from the South Pacific off the coast of Ecuador and the chances of seeing whales are very high. 40 kilometers west of the coast is the Isla de la Plata (Silver Island), which is often referred to as the "Galapagos for the poor" and to which daily trips are offered by various local companies. North of Puerto López are the beaches of Los Frailes, which, like Isla de la Plata, are part of the Machalilla National Park .
