Pungitius polyakovi is a fish that mainly lives in small water bodies and is known only from the Tonino-Aniva peninsula, the southeastern tip of the Russian island of Sakhalin .

features

Pungitius polyakovi has a slender body, becomes 36.4 to 50.5 mm long. Pungitius polyakovi can be distinguished from other Pungitius species mainly by the color of the fin spines and membranes. In specimens that are longer than 17 mm, the membranes attached to the dorsal spines are darkly pigmented, the membranes of the pelvic spines are blue and white. The pelvic fin spines are dark, the tip is light. The anal fin spine is dark at the base and blue and white at the tip. The dorsal and anal fins are darkly dotted, so that they have a dark gray color overall. Pungitius polyakovi has ten dorsal spines. The typical family signs on the sides of the body are missing. The caudal stalk is scaled (4–6 scales). The caudal fin is rounded. At spawning time, the belly and the lower head section of the male specimens take on a dark color.

distribution and habitat

Pungitius polyakovi lives exclusively in small rivers and streams that flow into five lakes on the Tonino-Aniva peninsula. The entire distribution area covers only 1,250 km². Like all sticklebacks, it builds a nest of plant material just above the bottom of the water during spawning time and shows pronounced, sometimes very complex brood care behavior.
