Punta Gorda (Belize)
Punta Gorda (5351 inhabitants) is the southernmost city in Belize ( Central America ), on the border with Guatemala and at the same time the capital of the Toledo province .
The city was founded by Garifunas , who still make up the main part of the population today - the rest are mestizos , Mayan descendants, Creoles etc.
PG - as Punta Gorda is called by the locals - is a starting point to visit the Mayan ruins (e.g. Lubaantun ) or to undertake rainforest tours.
Since Punta Gorda is the end point of the road connection from the northeast, there is no road connection to Guatemala , although Livingston would only be about 20 km as the crow flies. However, there is a daily, 1½-hour crossing by boat to Puerto Barrios .
