PureOS is a free operating system for smartphones and notebooks from Purism .

The operating system is based on the Linux operating system kernel and is based on a variant of the Debian distribution that has been modified by the company .

PureOS has been included in the list of free distributions by the Free Software Foundation ( FSF for short ) .

The operating system is supplied with a large number of pre-installed programs, including well - known ones such as the Gnome desktop environment , but also new ones such as the PureBrowser web browser , a version of Firefox modified by the company . However, Purism plans to switch to GNOME Web as the basis for their browser.

technical features

PureOS only works on devices with a 64-bit architecture . In addition, according to the official hardware requirements, the system requires at least one gigabyte of RAM and 15 gigabytes of hard disk space.

PureOS contains the free software packages from the main archive of the Debian testing version , in which packages are continuously updated according to the rolling release principle . Some of the packages are modified, for example to remove elements that suggest the installation of non-free software.

reception

The operating system is the subject of discussion in the trade press, especially in connection with products from the Librem series.

In its test of the Librem 15 notebook, the computer magazine c't comes to the result that the system runs smoothly and fully supports the hardware. Since Purism seems to update the repository manually, you may get updates a little later than with an unchanged Debian. It is also criticized that the PureBrowser could offer more extensions to protect privacy: "At least the Privacy Badger and a plug-in for automatically deleting cookies could have been preinstalled by Purism".
