Design and history

The monument was created by the sculptor Michail Anikuschin and erected in its current location in 1957 on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the founding of Saint Petersburg. It is about four meters high and shows a bronze statue representing Pushkin on a high base . The name of the poet is written in Cyrillic on the base.

Plans to erect a Pushkin memorial began as early as 1937. Initially, Birschewaja Platz was planned as the installation site . In 1937 and 1938 competitions were held in Moscow, but without results. In 1940 it was decided that the current location was on the Platz der Künste. In 1948, a third competition with eleven submitted proposals took place in Moscow. In 1949 the designs were also shown in Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg. In February 1949, designs by other artists were added, including the design by Anikuschin. It was revised and finally unveiled on June 19, 1957 on the Platz der Künste. In 1958 the work received the Lenin Prize .
