Puriel (also Pyriel , Puruel , Pusiel , Pyruel or Purel ) is an angel who appears only in the apocryphal testament of Abraham as an archangel , where he is described as ruthless and fiery. Together with Dokiel he is one of the two angels who test the souls of those who have gone to heaven.

Puruel in the will of Abraham

“The fiery and pitiless angel, holding the fire in his hand, is the archangel Puruel, who has power over fire, and tries the works of men through fire, and if the fire consume the work of any man, the angel of judgment immediately seizes him, and carries him away to the place of sinners, a most bitter place of punishment. "

“The fiery and merciless angel, holding fire in his hand, is the archangel Puruel, who holds power over fire and examines the works of men with fire, and when the fire destroys the work of a man, the angel sees him Jurisdiction and carries him away to the place of sinners, the bitterest place of punishment. Name and reception

The name Puriel is either interpreted as a hybrid of the Greek πῦρ (pyr) = fire and Hebrew אל (el) = God, or alternatively - with regard to the first part of the name - from פרענות (Pur'anut) = misfortune, catastrophe. He was best known through the film God's Army 3 with Christopher Walken in the leading role, where Puriel - here alternatively written Pyriel - is referred to as the angel of genocide, who will wipe out people and is seen by the apostate angels as their messiah .
