q R dimension
The q R dimension is a value specified in the Railway Building and Operating Regulations (EBO) Section 21 Annex 6 with a limit value of 6.5 mm for the edge steepness of the flanges of railway wheels (flange flank dimension).
The dimension must not be fallen short of, because otherwise the slope of the flange flank will be so steep that it is possible for switch blades , movable frogs , extension points and double frogs to run open when being driven on at a point and thus the rail vehicle derails. The q R dimension thus makes an important contribution to the safety of rail vehicles from derailing .
