Qacha's Nek (pronunciation: ˈ! Ɑtʃɑs nɛk ) is the capital of the Qacha's Nek district in Lesotho . It is located in the southeast of the country. The name means: mountain pass of the Ncatya . Ncatya was a son of morena Moorosi, while nek comes from Afrikaans .

geography

In 2016, Qacha's Nek had 15,917 residents. The city is the only one in the district named after it. It is only two kilometers from the southern border with South Africa at an altitude of around 1980 meters above sea level.

climate

With 900 millimeters of precipitation per year, the city has the highest rainfall of all Lesotho district capitals. Clouds move in from the nearby Indian Ocean almost every day, so there is often fog in Qacha's Nek . In summer the average temperature is 17 ° C, while in the capital Maseru it is 24 ° C.

traffic

From Qacha's Nek, the paved A4 leads to Quthing in the west, with a junction via Semonkong to Maseru. Other roads lead to Sehlabathebe National Park in the east and to Matatiele in South Africa. In addition, an airfield enables air connections to Maseru.

history

The area around what is now Qacha's Nek was exclusively inhabited by San until around 1850 . They were assimilated by the immigration of Phuthi under their chief Moorosi. After the Gun War 1880-1881, numerous Batlokoa from what is now South African Griqualand East settled under their leader Lelingoana in the area. Basotho also moved to the region for the first time from other parts of Basutoland . In 1888 the city of Qacha's Nek was founded as the British administrative center.

In 1961 the Roman Catholic diocese of Qacha's Nek was established in the city.
