Qala-i-Jangi

Qala-i-Jangi is a 19th century Afghan fortress near Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan .

history

The fortress was built in 1889 to defend against British troops . It took 12 years to build. The Taliban occupied the fort from 1994 to 2001 . It then served as a US prison camp. In 2001 the battle of Qala-i-Jangi broke out when the prisoners rebelled.
