Qanus is an approximately two km long river island in the Tigris in the province of Salah ad-Din south of Mosul and 170 kilometers southwest of Erbil . The airfield Qayyarah Airfield West is about 16 km away.

On September 10, 2019, the island was bombed with around 36 tons of ammunition to attack IS fighters . Aircraft of the type F-15E and F-35A were used . Ammunition of the type GBU-31 was used . Around twelve to 25 members of the IS were killed.
