Qāʿidat al-Qayyāra al-Jawwiyya ( Arabic قاعدة القيارة الجوية, DMG Qāʿidat al-Qayyāra al-ǧauwīya 'Air Force Base al-Qayyara') is the name of a base of the Iraqi Air Force that was built in the 1970s 20 km west of Qayyarah . It is located about 16 kilometers west of the Tigris , 60 km south of Mosul and about 300 km north of Baghdad .
The base was occupied by IS in 2014 . It was recaptured by the Iraqi army on July 9, 2016 and returned to service on October 21, 2016. The eastern runway (16/34) was permanently closed. The western runway (15/33) was badly damaged. A 1444 m × 18 m landing zone was prepared on the runway for use by the Lockheed C-130 .
