Gholhak (also Qolhak Persian قلهک) is a district in the north of Tehran . It lies between the districts of Elahieh in the west and Doulat in the east. Shariati Street (formerly Shemiran Street or Old Shemiran Street) runs through Gholhak .

history

In the Qajar era , Gholhak was a suburb of Tehran with a village structure. Under Mohammad Shah Qajar it was left to the British , while the neighboring district of Zargandeh was given to Russia . So the residents of Gholhak came under British rule.

The British built an extensive complex of 200,000 m² here. This included an embassy, office buildings and a chapel.

During Reza Shah Pahlavi's reign , the contract with the British expired and Gholhak was incorporated into the city of Tehran. However, the British continue to use the complex as a summer residence. The British Embassy, a branch of the British Council and a British school are still here today.

In the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi , Gholhak was also the district with the largest German community. The former largest German school abroad with almost 2000 students is also located in this quarter. Today it is continued in the form of the much smaller German Embassy School in Tehran .
