Quartana (volume measure)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Quartana , also Quartiera , was an Italian measure of volume for liquids and grain. It was the same for wine , brandy and oil and was valid on the island of Sardinia . In weight, the measure was about 10 pounds (sard.).

It was divided into 12 quartucci or 60 pints or 120 mezzettos.

  • 1 quartucci = 17.64 Parisian cubic inches = 0.35 liters (= 16.9 Parisian cubic inches = ⅓ liters)
  • 1 quartana = 211.7 Parisian cubic inches = 4.2 liters

As an oil measure, the measure was derived from the Barile / barrel and

  • 1 barile = 2 giarri = 8 quartanes = 96 quartucci = 192 misure / measure = 33.6 liters

The grain measure was

  • 1 quartana = 12 quartucci = 202 ¾ Parisian cubic inches = 4 liters
