Quasigeostrophic theory

The quasigeostrophic theory represents a possibility to explain the vergences ( convergence , divergence ) of the large-scale wind flow . It assumes that the earth's atmosphere strives at any point in time to maintain a balance between mass , pressure and wind fields . From this follows the assumption of a hydrostatic equilibrium and that of the balance between vortex strength and pressure field. The vortex strength is therefore of great importance. The equation was developed by Jule Gregory Charney .

In order to obtain the quasigeostrophic system of equations, the original meteorological equations are quasigeostrophically approximated in the p-system. This means that the advection wind and the vortex strength are geostrophically approximated, but the divergence is not. Instead, the divergence is replaced by the First Law .
