Quattro Canti in Catania

Quattro Canti (German: "four corners") is a square in the center of Catania in Sicily . It is at the intersection of two major streets ( Via Etnea , Via di Sangiuliano). The four palaces, which stand at the four corners of the intersection , have sloping facades so that an octagonal square is created.

Three of these corner palaces belonged to noble families of Sicily, the fourth belonged to the convent of S. Nicolella. From a balcony of this building Giuseppe Garibaldi called out his battle cry in the autumn of 1860 after the conquest of Sicily: “O Roma o morte!” (Either Rome or death) to call for the conquest of Rome and thus all of Italy.
