Queen's Cross Church (Glasgow)
The Queen's Cross Church is a former church building of the Free Church of Scotland in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1966 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.
history
Construction of the Queen's Cross Church for the Free Church of Scotland began in June 1898. The design was provided by the Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh . It is the only newly built church in Mackintosh's career. The first service was held on September 10, 1899. The total cost was £ 7,100. The ornamented wooden wall separating a classroom was pulled in in 1939. Gordon Webster designed the windows on the west facade in 1960. In 1977 the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society took over the building, which had since become obsolete, and set up its headquarters there. The church and an exhibition on the work of Mackintosh that has been set up there can be visited.
description
The Queen's Cross Church is located at the junction of Maryhill Road ( A81 ) and Garscube Road in the northwest of Glasgow. Stylistically, it shows features of neo-Gothic architecture as well as Art Nouveau . There are parallels to the design of the Harrow Parish Church in London designed by Richard Norman Shaw .
The masonry is made of red sandstone . The blunt, squat bell tower on the eastern edge is an interpretation of the bell tower of the medieval All Saints Church in Merriott in southwest England. At its foot is the pointed entrance portal. A tracery is embedded above it . A stair tower runs along the eastern flank. The final roofs are covered with slate .
