The cross-linked fall beetle ( Cryptocephalus moraei ) is a beetle from the leaf beetle family and the fall beetle subfamily (Cryptocephalinae).
Characteristics of the beetle
The beetle is three to five millimeters long. The basic color of the beetle is glossy black. The front and side edges of the pronotum are colored yellow. There is also a yellow or orange-yellow spot on the side and at the end of the elytra. However, the shape and color of the spots are variable. The antennae and legs are yellow, some blackened. The males have an x-shaped drawing on their foreheads, while the females have two red lines on their foreheads.
distribution
The distribution area of Cryptocephalus moraei extends over large parts of Europe and extends to the eastern Palearctic , to Asia Minor and the Caucasus . In Scandinavia, the occurrence extends to southern Norway, central Sweden and central Finland. In the British Isles, the species occurs mainly in southern England.
Way of life
The beetles usually fly from May to July. Their habitat is formed by field borders and slopes. The beetles are mostly found on St. John's wort ( Hypericum perforatum ) and other St. John's herbs ( Hypericum ). The larvae live in a larval sac, which offers them protection from predators.
