Ricochet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the navigation is as broaching a situation of the ship referred to in the ship's hull is transverse to the wind and the waves, without there being an intention of the master.

In motorized ships, failure of the engine can lead to this condition. In the case of a sailing ship , a stable driving situation can arise when ricocheting, so that no change in the ship's position can be brought about without sailing maneuvers .

The ricochet can occur with a mistake by the helmsman , a so-called patent jibe , but also with a very strong wave . In strong winds or storms, there is then the risk of capsizing because a subsequent wave can hit the boat with full force. Even when sailing close to the wind , a slight turn of the wind can cause the bow to turn due to the wind ( called a sun shot ) and the vehicle to cross over.
