Roman villa at Keynsham

The Roman Villa at Keynsham was a Roman mansion ( villa rustica ) on Durley Hill near the city of Keynsham , Bath District and North East Somerset , South West England Region .

It was discovered in 1877, but is located in the area of ​​a modern cemetery, so that it could only be examined from 1922 to 1924. It turned out that it was a particularly large and richly furnished villa. Only part of the villa could be excavated, as parts of the building are under a modern street.

Remains of ten mosaic floors were found in the villa, including at least one figurative. The villa's layout consisted of a series of rooms arranged on three sides around a large courtyard. Especially in the west, at the back of the courtyard, there were some representative rooms. One of them was hexagonal. Another hexagonal room had niches and was furnished with a figural mosaic depicting scenes from Greek mythology .
