Backflow preventer only allow pipelines , fittings and pumps to flow in one direction. When the direction of flow is reversed, they close automatically and open automatically when the direction of flow is permitted.

This is to avoid the emptying of higher lying pipelines and containers during downtimes or to protect pumps from backflow and backward pressure waves. In addition, they are used in the field of heating technology (plant construction) to prevent unwanted heat lift and to separate different heating circuits.

In the drinking water installation, non-return valves are installed in the house connection behind the water meter in order to prevent the counter from turning backwards in the event of pressure fluctuations. Furthermore, the safety combination (backflow preventer and pipe aerator ) prevents non-drinking water from being sucked back (e.g. bath water through the shower hose).

Some manufacturers (e.g. Thermoclassic) offer additional functions, such as a set-up screw, soft-sealing designs, etc.
