Marlene Reidel
Marlene Reidel (* December 20, 1923 in Landshut as Maria Magdalena Hartl ; † July 21, 2014 in Obergangkofen ) was a German painter , illustrator and children's book author .
Life
Maria Magdalena Hartl was born in Landshut in 1923 and grew up on a remote farm . In 1943 she began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , which she graduated in 1948. During her studies she met the sculptor Karl Reidel , whom she married after graduating from the academy. The couple had six children and remained married until Karl Reidel's death in 2006.
Since 1960 the artist has lived with her family near her place of birth in Obergangkofen near Kumhausen . The eldest daughter Beate Rose also works as a painter and runs a gallery in Landshut.
In addition to her work as a children's book author, Marlene Reidel also worked as a set designer and set designer for the German Theater in Hamburg in the 1960s . She also created various series of woodcuts , including about the life and death of the legendary Bavarian robber Mathias Kneißl .
Marlene Reidel has written and illustrated well over 100 books, almost 30 of her titles have been translated into other languages. In addition, she has illustrated over 50 texts by classical and modern authors. The writer has received numerous awards for her achievements.
In 1960, “Kasimir's World Tour” was named one of the “10 Best Books” by the New York Times. In 1964, “Gabriel with the Magic Wand” was voted one of the “Most Beautiful Books of the Year” by the German Book Trade Association. In 1977 “Anna und die Weiherhex '” was among the ten best books at the International Children's Book Exhibition in Tokyo.
In 2003/2004 the museums of the city of Landshut organized a large retrospective of their works under the title “Kasimir & Co” .
Reidel died in July 2014 at the age of 90 and was buried next to her husband Karl in the cemetery in the Obergangkofen district of the municipality of Kumhausen in the Landshut district .
