The Rücklenburg is the remainder of a hilltop castle on a hilltop next to the street Alte Stadt Nr. 20 in the Hagen district of Holthausen in North Rhine-Westphalia . The remains of the castle are located within the Hünenpforte nature reserve .
The Rücklenburg was probably built in the first half of the 13th century at the same time as the nearby Raffenburg as their outpost and in the same century was probably destroyed together with it in the War of the Limburg Succession in 1288 .
Today the castle site only shows the so-called cellar hole with the foundations of a rectangular tower, the remains of a moat wall system and traces of other buildings , which are barely visible . The remains were only rediscovered in 1980, together with those of a courtyard. The archaeological digs unearthed ceramic discs from the 13th century, crossbow bolts and scorch marks. It is believed that the fortified courtyard, located in the immediate vicinity of the Raffenburg, served a supply function and that the tower also served as a gateway and protection.
