The 5,655 hectare area has been registered under the identification number HA-001 since 1950 because of the special character and outstanding beauty of the limestone cliffs and the Hünenpforte rock gate and the cultural and historical importance of the former fortification " Rücklenburg " and the scientific and geological importance of the Hünenpforte and the cave system as a nature reserve expelled. The purpose of protection is the preservation and restoration of communities or habitats of certain wild plant and animal species in the beech forest "Hünenpforte" and the preservation and development of nationally important biotopes of rare and endangered as well as typical wild flora and fauna species of European importance. In the NSG there are numerous caves with sinter and stalactite formations. Longer caves are the Hünenpforte with a length of 240 m and the Villa Ribbert cave with a length of 300 m.
