The Alter Ruhrgraben nature reserve has an area of ​​13.41  hectares and is located in the area of ​​the independent city of Hagen in North Rhine-Westphalia . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1994 with the landscape plan of the city of Hagen by the city council of Hagen. It is located in the Garenfeld district . The NSG goes to the city limits. In the Unna district and in the town of Schwerte , the Alter Ruhrgraben nature reserve of the same name borders directly to the north and east . In the west the NSG borders on the L 673 and in the south on the L 676. The areas south of the L 676 belong to the Garenfeld landscape protection area .

Area description

In the NSG lies the river floodplain of the Ruhr with the old Ruhr ditch, while the Ruhr itself mostly runs further north. Only in the west is a small Ruhr area in the NSG. In the NSG there is grassland with hedges and head trees. There are also poor and wet meadows in the grassland.

Protection purpose

The NSG was designated as a nature reserve for the preservation and restoration of communities or habitats of certain wild plant and wild animal species as well as for the preservation and development of nationally significant biotopes of rare and endangered as well as typical wild plant and animal species of European importance .

Prohibitions and requirements in the NSG

Fishing is prohibited in the Ruhrgraben . A number of special requirements have been issued for the NSG . One of the imperatives is the elimination of the first afforestation in the area of ​​the pond, a bomb crater from the Second World War, in the NSG; Planting of riparian trees, hedges and head trees; Renaturation of water courses; Creation of wetting zones and maintenance of the fallow land.
