The Alter Ruhrgraben nature reserve with an area of 30.82 hectares is located in the urban area of Schwerte in the Unna district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1998 by the district council of the Unna district with the landscape plan No. 6 area Schwerte . It is located in the Westhofen district . The NSG goes to the city limits. In the area of the independent city of Hagen , the nature reserve of the same name, Alter Ruhrgraben (Hagen), borders directly to the south and west . In the southeast, the NSG goes to the L 675. There, the Schwerte-Ergste motorway exit of the A 45 is only about 300 m away. In the north there is agricultural land and a water catchment system. On the very narrow west side, the NSG goes up to the L 673.
Area description
In the NSG lies the river floodplain of the Ruhr with the old Ruhr ditch, while the Ruhr itself mostly runs further north. Only in the west is a small Ruhr area in the NSG. In the NSG there is grassland with hedges and head trees and forest areas. There are also poor and wet meadows in the grassland. In the NSG there are also still waters rich in floating leaves, reed beds, meadowsweet corridors, fallow areas, tall herbaceous corridors and oak-hornbeam forests.
Protection purpose
The NSG was designated as a nature reserve for the preservation and restoration of communities or habitats of certain wild plant and wild animal species as well as for the preservation and development of nationally significant biotopes of rare and endangered as well as typical wild plant and animal species of European importance .
Prohibitions and requirements in the NSG
In the NSG, fishing and driving on the Ruhr with canoes or other watercraft is prohibited . It is also forbidden to fortify the banks of the Ruhr and to remove or change the gravel banks in whole or in part. The grassland areas may not be mowed more than twice a year or grazed with more than 2 livestock units (1 dairy cow = 1 livestock unit) per hectare. The 1st mowing must not take place before June 15th and the 2nd mowing not before September 1st of any year. Because of the importance of the NSG as a migration, resting and wintering area for many bird species, company hunts are prohibited.
A number of special requirements have been issued for the NSG . One of the requirements is that areas in the NSG with the development goal of reed beds and alluvial forests are left to natural development. Any forest use is prohibited in the defined alluvial forest areas.
