The nature reserve Elsebachtal is a 53.71 hectare nature reserve (NSG) east of Ergste in the urban area of Schwerte in the Unna district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The NSG was designated in 1998 by the district council of the Unna district with the landscape plan No. 6 area Schwerte . The NSG goes to the border of the Märkisches Kreis . In the Märkischer Kreis, it borders on the nature reserve Elsebachtal (Iserlohn) in the urban area of Iserlohn .
Area description
The NSG is about 50 to 100 m wide, near-natural valley area of the Else. The valley is characterized by wooded terrace edges. The area is mostly grazed. The stream is accompanied by an alder wood on the banks of the river. It meanders slightly, steep banks and gravel banks can be found along the entire route. In places there are wet areas with forest rushes on pastures close to the groundwater.
The structurally rich, narrow Siektal with the upper reaches of the Reingser Bach belongs to the NSG. Partly there are species-rich brook alder forests along the Reingser Bach. The stream flows on the eastern edge of the valley with meadows in which there are moisture indicators in places. On the western edge of the Siektal, the edge of the terrace is separated from the arable land above by a strip of bushes dominated by bracken. In the north, horse pastures and orchards run from the Reingsen farm into the Bachtal. The Reingser Bach has a high structural diversity with steep walls, some more than 2 m high, gravel banks, shallow and deep water areas.
In total, the NSG stretches over approx. 6.5 km.
Protection purpose
The nature reserve was designated for the preservation and development of a valley and as a habitat for endangered animal and plant species. As with other nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area became a nature reserve “because of its scenic beauty and uniqueness”.
