Area description

The NSG was placed under nature protection in 1987 under the key number UN-019 . It extends to the west of the Bergkamen power plant and north of the Datteln-Hamm Canal and the Großes Holz mine dump .

A subsidence swamp about 12  hectares in size in the angle between Lippestrasse on the Datteln-Hamm Canal, surrounded by arable land and fat meadow, and to the east of it stagnant forest.

Small bodies of water with duckweed, reed beds, tall herbaceous meadows, wet meadows with sour grasses and orchids, the most species-rich and valuable area together with dry, poor meadows at the foot of the canal. The forest area in the east is a birch-oak-pine forest, which also contains a humid depression caused by mountain subsidence.

Protection goals and measures

For the preservation and restoration of communities or habitats of certain wild plants and wild animal species.

  • Preservation and development of the swamp area with its various development phases from the open two-tooth corridors to Großseggenried , reed beds to the quarry forest with its specific plant and animal species,
  • Conversion of non-indigenous wood stocks into near-natural forest communities with their typical plant and animal species as well as the development of a pronounced forest cover with a border,
  • Preservation and development of a subsidence area with numerous animal and plant species. The area is very valuable for amphibians.

Partial mowing at longer intervals and prevention of bush encroachment. Create a buffer zone to minimize fertilizer input from the neighboring fields. The canal bank should be included in protection considerations.

  • Preservation of the landscape structures • extensive grassland management, mowing • maintaining grassland use • no drainage • no fish ponds • creating a buffer zone.
