The three- furrow duckweed ( Lemna trisulca ), named after the three nerves of its limbs, is a species from the genus of the duckweed ( Lemna ) within the family of the arum family (Araceae).

description

Duckweed usually consist of one or more apparent "leaves" ( phyllocladia ) that contain air-filled cavities. You swim with it on the surface of water. From these leaflets, a root sinks down into the water, with which nutrient salts can be absorbed. There is no division into stem and leaf.

In contrast to the other duckweed, Lemna trisulca lives mostly submerged. This applies to the larger (3–15 mm long), flat, sterile scion limbs, which are often connected crosswise with long stalks to several, are green in color and appear somewhat transparent. Only the smaller flowering stems, which float individually, overflow with purple and are curved downwards at the edges, rise to the surface. The inconspicuous flowers sit in marginal pockets.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40 or 44.

Occurrence

The species is distributed worldwide. As is typical for duckweed, Lemna trisulca also often forms mass populations in sunny ponds, ponds and ditches, especially in fens and floodplains . However, these are less nitrogen-polluted bodies of water than, for example, the hunchbacked duckweed , which shows highly eutrophic water conditions. Accordingly, the tri-furrow duckweed is not common everywhere and can also be absent in some regions. Typical types of accompaniment include a. Frog bite and water feather . She is a character species of the Lemnion Union.

ecology

It stores starch in autumn and then sinks to the frost-free ground for winter.
