The low marsh cress ( Rorippa anceps , syn. Rorippa prostrata ) is a species of the genus marsh cress ( Rorippa ) within the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae).

description

The low-lying marsh cress is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 100 centimeters. The leaves are variable, pinnate to pinnate, rarely undivided, usually with a large end section, the upper ones are petiolate.

The flowering period extends from May to September. The hermaphrodite flowers are fourfold. The four petals are 3.5 to 5 millimeters long.

The fertile pods are 5 to 8 (sometimes up to 11) millimeters long and 1 to 2.5 millimeters wide, their stems are usually turned down. The fruit pen is 1 to 2.5 millimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.

Occurrence

The lower pond cress occurs in the temperate areas of Europe. Their distribution area extends north to southern Sweden.

The low marsh cress grows on nutrient-rich, mostly calcareous mud soils on banks with strongly fluctuating water levels; especially in floodplain and silted vegetation. In Central Europe it is considered a character species of the Phalaridetum arundinaceae from the Magnocaricion association, but also occurs in societies of the Agropyro-Rumicion association.
