Emil Paul von der Osten (born February 12, 1848 in Fürstenwalde / Spree , † April 2, 1905 in Oskarshamn in Sweden) was a German theater actor and writer .

Life

Emil von der Osten was the son of the actor and theater manager Emil von der Osten and Amalie Bertha Raszewsky, called Carli. At the age of just under thirteen he joined the Swedish Navy. He made three trips around the world and got to know Australia, India, Japan, China, advanced to officer and in 1870 participated in the shipwreck of the "Freya" on the island of Guadeloupe . He was one of the last ones on deck and escaped to shore by swimming.

Shortly thereafter, he resigned his sea service, but had to flee to America from the Antilles, where he was after the disaster, as a result of a duel with a younger comrade.

It was there that he discovered his talent and also stepped onto the stage in Philadelphia for the first time. Ottilie Genée , at that time director of the German Theater in San Francisco , called Osten and had the pleasure of witnessing his successes. Although he was widely recognized there, the great triumphs that Fanny Janauschek celebrated on the English stage prompted him also to study the English language in order to practice his art in this idiom.

The risk, because it was such a venture, succeeded beyond all expectation, for it received rapturous applause in Chicago, San Francisco, Milwaukee, Boston, etc.

After having performed successfully for a long time in all the major cities of the United States of America, both as a writer and as a reader, he was drawn back home, and so he embarked for Europe and entered Germany for the first time in Breslau Stage. Both there and at the Residenztheater in Hanover, he was popular and, after Ludwig Barnay's departure, he was won over to the Hamburg City Theater.

When Friedrich Dettmer died on October 24, 1880 , Osten was invited to a guest performance at the Dresden Court Theater .

In 1890 the artist left the association of the Dresden court theater in order to be able to undertake his guest tours more undisturbed. In the same year he went to America, where he appeared in his favorite roles in San Francisco. A year later he returned to Europe, no longer accepted a permanent engagement, but has only appeared as a guest on the first stages in Germany since then.

Von der Osten was married to the farmer's daughter Amanda M. Thedens (1859–1881), with whom he had a daughter Eleanor , in the USA . His second marriage was to Rosa von der Osten-Hildebrandt (1850–1911), their children were the actresses Eva von der Osten and Vali von der Osten , who was married to Fritz Windgassen , and his grandson was Wolfgang Windgassen .
