Göran Wahlenberg , also called Georg Wahlenberg, (born October 1, 1780 in Skarphyttans bruk in Socken Kroppa near Filipstad ; † March 22, 1851 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish botanist who taught and researched at Uppsala University . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Wahlenb. "

Life

Wahlenberg was the son of Göran Alexandersson Wahlenberg and Cajsa (nee Carlsdotter). At the age of 12 he was sent to Uppsala with his older brother for training. In 1806 he was awarded a doctorate at Uppsala University. med. PhD. He had already undertaken several botanical excursions to the Scandinavian mountain regions and made a trip to the Carpathian region from 1811 to 1814. From 1829 professor of botany, he was rector of the university in 1831 and 1842/43 . In 1808 he was accepted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .

Wahlenberg dealt mainly with the floristic botany , which he looked at from an ecological and vegetation-geographical point of view. One of his first publications was the geographical description of Lapland . In research areas that are far apart from one another ( Scandinavia , Bohemia , Hungary , Switzerland ) he recognized the importance of the large-scale climate, the "climate character" as the cause of the distribution of plants. At the polar and alpine distribution limits, he found that it is not the mean annual temperature that determines the vegetation limits, but the seasonal distribution of the amount of heat. Wahlberg died of an injury ( gangrene ) that had become infected.

Dedication names

The genus Wahlenbergia Schrad was named in his honor . ex Roth the plant family of the bellflower family (Campanulaceae) and the mushroom genus Wahlenbergiella Gueidan & Thüs named.
