The clove oatweed ( Aira caryophyllea ) is a species of the sweet grass family (Poaceae). Another name is common carnation oat .

description

The annual plant is 5 to 20 cm, exceptionally up to 40 cm high. The leaves are green in early summer. The panicles are loosely spread out consist of two-flowered spikelets . The dorsal awn of the lemmas is 2 to 3 mm long.

The clove-wreath blooms in June and July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14 or 28.

Occurrence

The natural occurrence of the species ranges from Europe to the Caucasus, from the Mediterranean area to the mountains of Africa, from Tibet to the western Himalayas and also includes Macaronesia. It is a neophyte in North America , New Zealand, Hawaii and other countries.

The Nelken-Haferschmiele mainly colonizes rock corridors , acidic dry grassland as well as ruderal sites and fallow land on sandy locations. It thrives on warm, dry, base-rich, lime-poor, moderately acidic to neutral, humus and fine earth poor, loose sand and stone gravel soils. It is a character species of the Airo caryophylleae-Festucetum ovinae from the Thero-Airion association.

Systematics

Two subspecies are distinguished in Germany:

  • Aira caryophyllea subsp. caryophyllea
  • Aira caryophyllea subsp. plesiantha (Jord.) K. Richt . (Syn .: Aira caryophyllea subsp. Multiculmis (Dumort.) Bonnier & Layens ): The home is the Mediterranean. It is a character species of the Teesdalio-Arnoseridetum from the sub-association Arnoseridenion. Was u. a. known from a site in Baden-Württemberg, is considered to be extinct in Germany.
