Oaterschmielen ( Aira ) are a genus of plants within the sweet grass family (Poaceae). The eight or so species are common in Eurasia , North Africa and Macaronesia .

Vegetative characteristics
In Aira TYPES is comparatively small stature, annual herbaceous plants that achieve the most growth heights between 5 and 20 cm.
Generative characteristics
The spikelets are arranged in paniculate inflorescences . Usually two flowers are arranged in small (1.5 to 3 millimeters) spikelets . Each spikelet has one or two awns of equal length, which arise on the back of the lemma.
Systematics and distribution
The genus Aira was established in 1753. Synonyms for Aira L. are: Aspris Adans. , Caryophyllea Opiz , Fiorinia Parl. , Fussia Schur .
The Aira species are common in Eurasia , North Africa and Macaronesia and are also found on mountains in tropical Africa. All eight species occur in Europe. In Germany, the two types of clove-wreath ( Aira caryophyllea ) and early wreath ( Aira praecox ) originally occur.
The genus Aira includes about eight species:
- Clove oatweed ( Aira caryophyllea L. ): It is widespread from the Azores and Canaries across Europe and northwest Africa to Iran and the Caucasus and from Tibet to the western Himalayas and is also found on mountains in tropical Africa. It is a neophyte in North and South America, Australia and New Zealand .
- Aira cupaniana cast. : It occurs in the Mediterranean area and on Lanzarote .
- Haar-Oaterschmiele ( Aira elegantissima Schur ): The original homeland is Morocco , Algeria and the area from southern Europe and southern central Europe to northern Iran. As an ornamental plant and wild, it also occurs in Central Europe and North America.
- Early Haferschmiele ( Aira praecox L. ): It occurs in Europe and the Canary Islands and is inconsistent in Turkey. She is a neophyte in North America.
- Aira provincialis Jord. : It occurs only in south-eastern France and Corsica .
- Aira scoparia Adamović : It only occurs in Macedonia .
- Aira tenorei cast. : It occurs in Northwest Africa , Libya and Southern Europe.
- Aira uniaristata Lag. & Rodr. : It occurs in the Balearic Islands , Spain , Portugal , Morocco and Libya.
