Öküzgözü

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Öküzgözü is the name of an important autochthonous red wine variety in Turkey . Like the Bogazkere vine, it comes from the Elazığ province in eastern central Anatolia and is also grown in the Gaziantep and Malatya provinces .

The large, shouldered grapes of this vine bear exceptionally large, round, blue-gray berries, which is reflected in the Turkish name: Turkish. Öküzgözü means ox-eye .

Pure varietal wines from the Öküzgözü are bright red, fruity-fresh and have aromas of cherries and raspberries with a mild tannin structure . Usually, however, the musts of the Öküzgözü are blended with those of other red wine grapes. The Bogazkere is the most common blending partner, but recently Merlot , Cabernet Sauvignon and Gamay have also been included in the cuvées .
