Franz Jochen Schoeller
Franz-Joachim (Jochen) Philipp Schoeller (born July 24, 1926 in Düsseldorf ; † May 13, 2019 ) was a German diplomat and ambassador .
Life
Schoeller studied law and economics at the Universities of Cologne and Paris . After completing his exams, he was accepted into the higher foreign service from 1955 . Here Schoeller carried out his first foreign assignments at the embassies in France , Italy , Tanzania , Spain and finally in Iran , where he served as permanent representative of the German ambassador in Tehran . From 1973 he was appointed to the protocol staff of the Foreign Office and in 1975 was promoted to chief of protocol in the German Foreign Office . He was characterized by organizational talent, protocol discipline and enormous nerves.
Appointments as ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the German embassies in Brasília , Paris and Warsaw followed . As ambassador in Warsaw, Schoeller granted asylum to GDR citizens wishing to leave the country in the second half of 1989 on the premises of the embassy . A few months later, however, in November 1989, was officially Schoeller at his own request "health reasons" in the retirement staggered, which he forestalled a dismissal on the basis of suspicion of involvement in dubious arms deals.
Franz Jochen Schoeller was also an honorary president of the board of EuroDefense , an organization which, together with its partner associations, is working, among other things, on a common European security and defense policy. Schoeller was also a member of the German Society of Members of the French Legion of Honor and the French National Order of Merit eV
