The knotweed dock ( Rumex conglomeratus ), also called streifwurtz or knot- flowered dock , belongs to the knotweed family (Polygonaceae).

description

The tangle dock is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 80 centimeters, often it is already branched at the bottom. Its basal leaves are up to 20 cm long and 6 cm wide, rounded at the base or slightly heart-shaped. He has a total inflorescence with numerous, each one lanceolate bract borne Scheinwirteln that stand apart. The blades are 2 to 3 mm long and each has a large callus.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Occurrence

The distribution area includes Europe, Africa, West and Central Asia. It is a neophyte in Macaronesia, North and South America, Australia and New Zealand.

The tangled dock can be found scattered (and inconsistent) in patchy weed meadows, on ditches, banks, and also in fields. It loves nitrogen-rich, often moderately alkaline, moist, sandy, muddy or loamy-clay soils. It is absent in the rough areas of the lowlands and mountains. According to Ellenberg , it is a light plant, a moisture pointer, a pronounced nitrogen pointer and a class character of the creeping ostrich lawn or the flood lawn ( Agrostietea stoloniferae ). According to Oberdorfer , it appears in societies of the Agropyro-Rumicion, Bidention or the Atropetalia order.

It is a pioneer plant and can often cover backfilled soils with large stands within a short period of time. However, in contrast to the blunt-leaved dock ( Rumex obtusifolius ) and the curled dock ( Rumex crispus ), it can also be absent in entire regions.
