The locomotives of the RŽD series ТЭМ9 (German transcription TEM9 ) of the Russian Railways (RŽD) are wide-gauge diesel locomotives with diesel-electric power transmission primarily for shunting and pull-out service. The power transmission is based on the principle of mixed current technology, the traction generator generates electricity in alternating current , the traction drive motors work on the basis of direct current machines . The vehicles are only manufactured for a track width of 1,520 mm; their area of application extends to large industrial companies in metallurgy , the chemical industry , energy technology , railway construction companies, the construction industry and others

In the production of the diesel locomotive with the series ТЭМ9 , modern principles of module assembly were used, which significantly improved the operational possibilities and the technical operation of the locomotive. This means that it can travel on curved tracks with a small radius, which is important for working on track systems in industrial companies. The electric power transmission in mixed current technology is used on the locomotive, it guarantees the reliability of the locomotive and easy maintenance of the machine system. The newly installed diesel generator unit has improved consumption properties and lower exhaust gas values, and a microprocessor system for control, administration and diagnostics has been introduced. The driver's cab guarantees safe operation of the locomotive, and great importance is attached to compliance with ergonomic and user-friendly requirements .
Delivery and operation
As of May 2018, 58 locomotives were delivered, although it can be assumed that the number will increase significantly in the next few years. A hybrid locomotive with the designation Т BezeichnungМ9H-001 ( TEM9N-001 ) is also included in the delivery . All locomotives have so far been delivered to industrial companies.
