RADNET (air traffic)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

RADNET is the name of the civil radar data network of the German Air Traffic Control . It integrates the air traffic control radar devices and supplies the control centers with the radar display of air traffic. The ASTERIX protocol of the European organization for air traffic control EUROCONTROL is used for data transmission . The same system is used within the Bundeswehr and is called MilRADNET .

The introduction was made necessary by the use of Mode S in the secondary radar to drastically reduce the number of queries sent to the aircraft (to reduce mutual interference). An aircraft is only queried once or twice at the beginning of the location, then its answer is transmitted to all radar devices organized in a cluster. The aircraft's transponder no longer responds to the secondary radar queries from the radar devices combined in this cluster.

If targets are detected by several radars, the system correlates a single target character. Inaccuracies in the determination of the positions due to non-linearities in the antenna rotation as well as differences in distance due to non-simultaneous positioning or different algorithms when converting the inclined distance into a geographical distance are statistically compensated.
