The RBC Cologne 99ers eV is a German wheelchair basketball club from Cologne .

Since it was founded in 2008, it has been represented in the first and second RBBL ( wheelchair basketball Bundesliga ). 2008 with four, since the 2010/2011 season five teams have started in all five performance classes offered in NRW. The club is the largest wheelchair basketball club in Germany.

history

An era comes to an end

The roots of the RBC Cologne lie with the Wheelchair Sports Club (RSC) Cologne. In the years 2001 to 2005 this recorded a strong increase in membership, so that a second and third wheelchair basketball team could be sent into the sporting competition.

The basketball players quickly became the largest and financially strongest division of the RSC. The desire for greater professionalism, especially after promotion to the 1st wheelchair basketball league in 2006, could not be fulfilled within the predominantly popular sports club RSC Cologne, which is why it was decided to found a club of its own.

With the end of the 2007/2008 season, the promotion of the second team to the 2nd North Wheelchair Basketball Bundesliga was confirmed.

In the run-up to the founding of the association, discussions were held with various other associations in order to gain ideas and advice as well as possible cooperation partners. The talks with the professionals of the Cologne 99ers were the most successful and at the same time promised the greatest success in the start-up.

When the club was founded in the summer of 2008, an almost 40-year era of wheelchair basketball at RSC Cologne came to an end.

The RBC is born

The around 50 former members now founded the RBC Cologne 99ers, a registered and non-profit association. This concluded a cooperation with the professional basketball players of the Cologne 99ers as well as with the "pedestrian" basketball club SG Cologne 99ers. Together they formed the CSoB (Cologne School of Basketball). The CSoB had more than 800 members and thus became the largest German basketball club, which aimed to target young people and, above all, to support socially disadvantaged young people. In the 2008/2009 season, the Cologne Rollis started their league game operations under the name "Köln 99ers" and played a league game in red and white for the first time on October 4, 2008. The new colors seemed to inspire, because for the first time in a long time the game against ASV Bonn could be won.

At the same time, the increase in members continued. With the founding of the new club, a fourth team was created as the first German wheelchair basketball club. She should go to the start in the newly introduced Landesliga West. Overall, the season was very positive for all teams and ended for the first team in the first round of the European Cup.

Bankruptcy of the professionals

The first insolvency application of the professionals of the Cologne 99ers 2008 could still be averted, but on July 10th, 2009 the Köln 99ers Basketball GmbH again filed for insolvency at the Cologne District Court. Since the RBC was already an independent club, the bankruptcy of the professionals did not affect it financially. Of course, the situation was difficult because shortly after the start-up an important cooperation partner and consultant was no longer available. But the SG also survived the bankruptcy proceedings and so the cooperation could continue without the professionals.

today

In the 2010/2011 season, RBC Cologne succeeded for the first time in filling every league offered in NRW with a team. This was preceded by the establishment of a fifth team. And already in the so-called "pre-season" it became clear that this new team will have more than 15 players. In 2019, RBC Cologne had to relegate to the second Bundesliga for the first time .

"Tiger Rollis" fan club

The TigerRollis are the 1st official fan club of the RBC Köln99ers. Particularly after the bankruptcy of the “runners basketball players”, parts of the Flying Flönz fan club, which had more than 135 members and was founded in 2006, also began to get involved with the RBC. The "drummers" quickly became a familiar backdrop at home games and were also involved in other ways in the club. The fan club is now also organizing regular trips away to support the Cologne 99ers abroad.

In 2010 a new name was needed to underline the membership of the wheelchair basketball players. In the summer there was then a vote, whereby the name "TigerRollies" prevailed. The new fan club in no way replaces the Flying Flönz, but rather should be seen as a supplement.
