RM16 house number

RM16 is a house occupied in 1999 and legalized in 2002 at Robert-Matzke-Straße 16 in the Dresden district of Pieschen , which is now used as a residential and cultural project.

The house was built shortly before 1900 and never completely modernized. Four full floors offer space for approx. 480 m² of living space and approx. 70 m² of event space. In addition, the house has around 500 m² of open space that is used as a garden.

Occupation and legalization

Occupation of the RM16 in 1999

In October 1999 the house was occupied after a lengthy campaign. The aim of this was to create a left-wing radical place for politics and culture. Since the occupation, the RM16 has been a place with a clear anti-fascist and emancipatory self-image. Although the house was evacuated by the police shortly after the squatters began to furnish and decorate it, it was reoccupied a few hours later. Due to the tenacity of the squatters and not least due to fortunate circumstances, the house project was able to hold up from this point on and later conclude a usage contract (2002). In the meantime, the RM16 is one of the last long-term successfully occupied houses in Dresden. It is not only a residential building, but also a venue for lectures, cinema events, concerts and parties.

RM16 as the venue

Due to the continuous work, the RM16 has developed into a place where anti-racist and socially critical projects, artists and other committed people can live theory, practice and party and realize alternative social designs. After club events (exhibitions, concerts, readings, political discussions, lectures, etc.) had been held on the ground floor and basement relatively undisturbed in recent years, on April 24, 2012, the landlord turned any use of the ground floor and basement for assembly and Prohibited for event purposes.

Attacks by neo-Nazis

Since then, the RM16 has been an important place of resistance against neo-Nazis and reactionary politics in Dresden. That is why the house and its residents, like other projects in Dresden, were often the target of Nazi attacks. From 2007 to 2010 alone, the RM16 was attacked 13 times. Windows were smashed, cars damaged and the garden rioted. In 2010 a neo-Nazi from Dresden threw a Molotov cocktail into the house one night . Only by acting quickly could the fire be extinguished in time so that no one was injured. At that time there were 12 people in the house. The perpetrator was sentenced to a youth sentence of 7 years and 10 months for ten attempts at murder and particularly serious arson.

meaning

On September 23, 2012 the history and commemorative plaque about Robert Matzke in the residential and cultural project RM16 was inaugurated . Since then, the plaque can be seen in the stairwell at Robert-Matzke-Straße 16.
