Rachid Mrabet

Rachid Mrabet (born July 22, 1964 in Oujda ) is a Moroccan agronomist .

Life

Mrabet completed a bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering at the Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire Hassan II (IAV Hassan II) in Rabat from 1982 to 1986 . He then completed a master’s degree in soil physics there from 1986 to 1989 . From 1993 to 1997 he completed a PhD in agronomy at Colorado State University . Since 1990 he has been scientifically active at the Institut national de la recherche agronomique (INRA), since 2012 as its head of the research department.

Mrabet is married and has three children.

Act

Mrabet made important contributions to the study of agriculture under the influence of drought in the Mediterranean region, particularly in Morocco. He was able to show that no-till in the event of rain provides equivalent results compared to conventional methods, but is superior to these methods when there is little rainfall. He is actively involved in the public debate about the scarcity of resources in times of planetary limits and the climate crisis . He said: “Sustainable economic development, food security and social and political stability are closely related to the growth of the agricultural sector, which is inevitably linked to the future of the environment and requires a rational use of natural resources.” He was on Special Report 1, 5 ° C global warming (2018) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) involved as a reviewer. In addition, he has repeatedly contributed to research projects in the European Union.
