Rachsch ( Persian رخش, DMG raḫš , 'shining') is the stallion of the protagonist Rostam in the Persian national epic Shāhnāme von Firdausi . Rachsch is snow white with a reddish mane . He is highly intelligent and his loyalty is amazing. From the numerous herds of horses in Zabulistan and Kabulistan that belong to his father Zāl , Rostam chooses him as a colt after defeating his mother, a gray mare. Rachsch is the only one that does not bear any branding , but has been designated as “Rostam's Rachsch” from the start. When he asks the shepherd of the flock about the price of the beast:

“He
replied : 'If you are Rostam, ride him and fight for Iran's peace.
Iran's people and country are its price;
Make order in the earth's circle on him! '"

No one but Rostam rides Rachsch and Rachsch does not recognize anyone but Rostam as his master. In addition, he is the only horse Rostam could ride because its strength and weight would kill any other horse. Thanks to divine grace that Rostam protects, Rachsch lives an unusually long life. Rostam and Rachsch both die from the betrayal of Rostam's half-brother Shagād .
