history

View from the northwest

Porschestrasse was built in 1950 as the central shopping street of the city, which was founded in 1938. Goods of higher quality should be offered here. During the economic miracle, commercial buildings were built on both sides , including the so-called rack building on the east side, which the interior decorator Georg Rack had built. The architect was Heinrich Senge from Wolfsburg. Rack sold carpets , linoleum , wallpaper, curtains and rugs in his shop .

In 2012, an application by the owners to be allowed to alter the structure of the house was rejected for monument protection reasons.

description

Main entrance with showcases

The row of shops on Porschestrasse consists of two floors that are vertically bisected by a funnel-shaped entrance. There are large windows on the ground floor. The equally large windows on the upper floor protrude and are held in place by narrow window profiles and steel supports. A flat roof protruding again forms the upper end. The main entrance area is equipped with large showcases and a mosaic floor.

Inside the two business rooms, a curved staircase leads to the upper floor.

The building from the southeast

Above that, offset to the rear, is a three-story building with a smaller floor plan, in which there are apartments. On its roof there is the original advertising figure of a striding man with a load on his shoulder. The top floor facing Porschestrasse is decorated with the original “Rack” lettering; underneath is the symbol of Deutsche Telekom , which operates the shop on the right - from Porschestrasse. Another two four-story, each slightly offset blocks with apartments adjoin to the east. They are characterized by curved balconies on the south and east sides. To the north is a similar building, which is connected to the rack building by the row of shops and an equally protruding canopy and has two apartment blocks.

The house belongs to Rack GmbH & Co. KG .
