Radar Target Enhancer

Radar Target Enhancers (RTE) are active responders for radar signals and are used by ships in maritime shipping in order to be better recognized on the radar.

The Radar Target Enhancer receives the radar signal in the frequency range 9.3  GHz to 9.5 GHz, stores it in a delay loop and then sends the signal back to the transmitter at the same frequency. This technology significantly increases the range and visibility of small vehicles. The effect of the recorded radar signal decreases the larger the reflective surface of the ship, which is why the technology is primarily intended for small ships that do not have their own radar system.

The devices usually indicate the reception of a radar signal, i.e. their own detection by a radar.

Search and Rescue Radar Transponders (SART) are RTE beacons for SAR use and are part of the GMDSS system . However, they send back a differentiated, distance-dependent X-band signal and are only used in emergencies.
