Radio 96.8 (own spelling radio96acht Bonn ) was a university radio at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg , which broadcast on the VHF frequency 96.8 MHz with 500 watts. The station could be received in the Bonn city area and in some parts of the Rhein-Sieg district . The antenna is located on the former pedagogical faculty on Römerstrasse. On July 5, 2013, it merged with the city's other campus radio, Bonncampus 96.8 , to form the new transmitter bonnFM , which broadcasts on the same frequency, but now from a new studio.

program

The station's program was not designed by a single editorial team, but distributed between two editorial offices. This was mostly a program presented by the moderators. The concept is similar to the British broadcaster BFBS , where the moderators choose the music themselves during the broadcast.

Alternative programs also ran at later broadcast times. Most of the radio groups received the news every hour on WDR 5 .

history

Forerunners of today's universal university radio were various individual broadcasts. After approval by the State Agency for Media , broadcasting started on the day of the first Bonn University Festival on July 9, 2005.

In order to organize the radio, the university's 25th student parliament initially decreed the establishment of a student umbrella organization for three groups. Its management should be taken over by a trained journalist, the managing editor-in-chief. The university and the technical college then took a different path by founding three further groups. The program was thus designed by the six groups using what is known as frequency splitting. In detail these were:

  1. The Uniradio Bonn working group (AG URB)
  2. The Free Radio Bonn (FRB)
  3. The university radio (HoRa)
  4. The Campus Radio Bonn (CaRa Bonn)
  5. Radio observatory
  6. The FH radio

The umbrella organization radio96acht Bonn, to which the first three groups mentioned belonged, was confirmed by the university's 30th Bonn student parliament in 2008 as particularly worthy of support.

With the scheduled license extension in summer 2009, the three groups that were already working together joined forces, so that now only two independent groups (radio96acht Bonn and Campusradio Bonn (consisting of groups 3rd to 4th) broadcast on the frequency.

On July 5, 2013, shortly before the 8th birthday of the Bonn campus radios, these two groups finally merged into one large campus radio, which has been called bonnFM ever since . The first official broadcast day of the station was July 9th.

Radio groups

Two groups shared three studios :

  • bonncampus 96.8 - Studio Alte Sternwarte and Studio Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg
  • radio96acht Bonn - Studio Lennestrasse

bonnFM initially continued to use the studio in the Alte Sternwarte, but moved into a new studio on Adenauerallee in 2017 .
