Radio Bavaria International

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Radio Bavaria International (RBI) was a private radio station broadcasting from South Tyrol towards Germany . It was the first private radio station that could be heard in Bavaria .

At the time, private broadcasting was allowed in Italy , but not in Germany, Switzerland or Austria . The radio station took advantage of a loophole in the Italian broadcasting law that allowed "holiday radios" to be operated in German. Despite the prohibition of private broadcasting, the German authorities could not take action against the broadcaster because it was on Italian territory and the frequency was coordinated in Italy. A comparable transmitter was operated by the Swiss with Radio 24 from Pizzo Groppera , whose antennas were aimed at Zurich. Italian holiday radio stations on the same frequency were not disturbed, as the antennas were oriented towards the north.

The programs were broadcast by the South Tyrolean Zirogalm . Transmission started in May 1979 on the frequency 103.5 MHz with a transmission power of 500 watts from a radio antenna group aimed at Bavaria . Due to the high location in the Brenner massif and the antennas used, the broadcasts up to the Innsbruck area and southern Bavaria were easy to receive. RBI was founded by journalist , radio amateur and disc jockey Jo Lüders and Jürgen von Wedel. Initially they reached Innsbruck, later Munich. In addition to Jo Lüders, the moderator team included Axel Ricken, Freddy Leitner, Daniel Kovac and Rick Hölzl. In autumn 1982 the broadcasting was stopped.
