Radio Liban ( Arabic إذاعة لبنان, DMG Iḏāʿa Lubnān ) is the state radio operator in Lebanon . It organizes an Arabic program on FM 98.1 (one channel) and 98.5 (two channels) and a predominantly French program on FM 96.2 (four channels). Like the television service Télé Liban, it is a member of the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU).

history

Broadcasting began in the French mandate for Syria and Lebanon in September 1938 with Radio Levant via a 4 kW transmitter in Beirut , operated by Société Radio-Orient . After the outbreak of World War II, the station was initially on the side of the Vichy regime , which is why in 1940/41 in Haifa with the help of the Hagana Radio Levant France Libre was installed as a counterweight. After Operation Exporter in 1941, Radio Levant was under French control and in 1942 received a counterpart in Damascus with Radio Damas on shortwave . As a result of the independence of Greater Lebanon in 1943/46, Radio Levant became the Service de Radiodiffusion de la République Lebanaise, or Radio Liban for short . In the Copenhagen wave plan , Beirut received the medium wave frequencies 836 and 989 kHz; on the latter, the Arabic program became independent in 1958.
