from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rafai was a sultanate of the Bandia - Azande in Central Africa.

This empire was founded in 1800 by Kassanga , a warlord and former exile, with a larger following. The sultanate was located on the Mbomou River, around the current city of Rafaï in the Central African Republic , which also served as the capital. The official language was Azande .

In 1892, the Sultan of Rafai signed an agreement with the Belgian King Léopold II . From April 8, 1892 to March 31, 1909, the region, like the sultanates of Bang Assou and Zémio , was a protectorate of Leopold's private colony of the Congo Free State . In 1909, Rafai was forcibly attached to the French Central Congo colony. Today it is part of Mbomou Prefecture within the Central African Republic.
