Origin and meaning

The term comes from Arabic, from where it found its way into the Swahili language, received an additional -i ending and was used in this form in our country, and means friend, comrade, partner . Since in East Africa (and especially in Tanzania ) names are chosen with a meaning, Rafiki is occasionally also found as a name (but only for people of the male sex). The majority in Swahili is marafiki or rafiki .
