Sacro Monte di Ossuccio

The Sacro Monte di Ossuccio is a place of pilgrimage in the Italian town of Ossuccio , which is one of the so-called Sacri Monti . The pilgrimage site is on the west side of Lake Como . The Sacri Monti in Piedmont and Lombardy have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003 .

The fourteen chapels of the Sacro Monte contain representations of the mysteries of the rosary . They were built between 1635 and 1710 on a sloping path that leads to a church dedicated to Our Lady . Representations of the mysteries of the Joyful, the Sorrowful and the Glorious Rosary include 230 statues made from terracotta by various Italian artists. The buildings on the Sacro Monte di Ossuccio go back to the Franciscan friars who had them built with the support of noble families from the area; Coats of arms of these families adorn the doors of some chapels.

The pilgrimage church was built in 1537, the apse and side aisles were built later. The bell tower by the architect Giovanni Battista Bianchi was completed in 1719 after twenty-five years of work.

Chapels

Each of the chapels is dedicated to the representation of a mystery of the rosary, while the chapels follow the scheme of the weekly rhythm of rosary prayers in the Catholic Church : the chapels with the joyful secrets are followed by the painful, then the glorious. The church with the representation of Mary's coronation in heaven is also the 15th station on the way.
